A lot of controversy is caused by various diets, focusing, for example, on body type or blood group. The basis of a healthy diet should be a balance between nutrients and calories, as well as the supply of essential vitamins and minerals. Therefore, dividing foods according to certain characteristics of the body is not entirely rational.

Blood group nutrition

The theory of good nutrition for each blood group is that people with different blood groups process foods differently. According to the theory, people on a diet specific to their blood group can improve their health and reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease.

What is a blood group diet?

There are 4 different diets offered, one for each blood group.

Type A: people of the second group, belonging to farmers. They are asked to eat plant-based foods without red meat. Type A diets should most closely resemble vegetarian diets.

Type B: people with a third group or nomads. They must eat plants and can eat meat (except chicken and pork), some dairy products. They should avoid wheat, corn, lentils, tomatoes, and a few other foods.

Type AB: people with a fourth group or puzzles. They are a "mix" between types A and B and should eat a diet rich in seafood, tofu, dairy products, beans and grains. However, they should exclude beans, corn, beef, and chicken.

Type O: people with the first group or hunters. They should eat foods rich in protein, the diet is rich in meat, fish, poultry, some fruits and vegetables, but it is worth limiting grains, legumes and dairy products (the diet is very similar to paleo).

Most people who end up adopting this style of eating do so because they are looking for a solution to a health problem or are involved in preventing complications.

Will a blood group diet help?

For centuries, people have eaten food without being guided by their blood type, without having weight and health issues. All the health problems we see today (especially chronic diseases and weight problems) and the deterioration of our health are completely independent of our blood groups.

Many of our grandparents and generations before them lived long and healthy lives. They were much healthier than most people today. They probably weren't eating according to their blood type (and often weren't even aware of it). Therefore, it is logical to conclude that a significant contribution to their health and longevity was obviously not made by the diet by blood group, but by the lifestyle itself. This means that you can be healthy and live a long life without following a strict blood group diet.

Nutrition by body type

Can body type - whether ectomorph (asthenic), mesomorph (normostenic), or endomorph (hypertensive) - determine what you should eat to be healthy and lean? Even scientists have not given a definitive answer. Foods that are right for your body type or body type are one of the most discussed nutritional topics in our society.

There are two types of people:

  • Put too much emphasis on body typing.
  • Reject body types and their impact on any area of life.

Like many very controversial topics, the truth lies somewhere between two extremes. For most people, eating according to body type is neither necessary nor important. For them, it is just not the most effective tool to meet their needs and goals. But eating according to body type can benefit some people in several specific situations.

You've probably heard of three body types:

  • Ectomorphs (in our country they are often called asthenics) with thin, narrow, delicate, fragile and linear body features and weak muscles.
  • Endomorphic (or hypersthenic) with soft, round features, large bones and excess weight.
  • Mesomorphs (normostenic) are broad shouldered, narrow at the waist and hips, muscular, compact and athletic.

The somatotype describes components of the body such as body fat, muscle mass, and the relationship between them. This is why, over the years, the somatotype has become an assessment tool for healthcare professionals and researchers, similar to the body mass index (BMI). While neither of these is a perfect system, BMI and somatotype help classify people into specific groups.

Do you need to eat only for your body type?

In general, no. It's important to note that these are only general conceptual categories - principles that can potentially help you with your nutritional choices. Body type is a reason to think about possible differences in metabolism, type of activity, and nutritional requirements.

For the average person who just wants to look and feel better, a body type diet is unnecessary. It also makes feeding unnecessarily complex. For these people, there are much simpler and more affordable strategies - you need to eat less fat, less sugar, more vegetables and more fruits.

So who benefits from diet based on body type? There are generally two types of people who enter this camp: professional athletes and people who cannot achieve their goals with basic nutritional strategies alone.

In these very rare cases, changing the distribution of macronutrients based on body type (or especially fat to muscle ratio) can be an effective strategy, but only after the diet is actually healthy in terms of calories and BJU.

What does everyone need?

Regardless of blood type, body type, and any other characteristic, everyone needs a healthy and balanced diet. It includes the consumption of calories according to their expenditure. These indicators are determined by age, sex and lifestyle. On average, a man needs about 2500 kcal per day, a woman about 2000 kcal.

If you need to lose weight gradually, create a calorie deficit of 5-10% per day, then the excess fat will start to melt away, regardless of body type and blood type. It is important to consume as much natural foods as possible and as few food chemicals as possible, refined, processed foods, and fast food restaurants. Cut down on salt, sugar and trans fats as much as possible. And then it will be possible to solve problems both with health and with a number.
